Recent advances in genomic research are leading to a new era in medicine. In the next few years, the use of genomic data in healthcare will rapidly increase. In the future, decisions regarding the prevention and treatment of diseases will be increasingly based on an individual s genetic makeup. This major change in medicine requires careful preparation. The National Genome Strategy sets key measures for ensuring that, by 2020, genomic data will be effectively used in healthcare and in the promotion of health and wellbeing. Achieving this objective will require development of a Finnish national reference database of genomes to be used in clinical care and research. The capacity of healthcare professionals to apply genome-based information should be strengthened, and people need to be empowered to improve their own health by effective use of genomic information.
